Fully Diluted Valuation (FDV)

Definition

Fully diluted valuation estimates what a crypto project would be worth if its entire token supply were circulating at the current price. Researchers compare FDV to circulating market cap to judge unlock overhang and whether today’s price discovery is happening on a thin float.

Treat FDV as a stress sketch, not a fair-value oracle. It asks what capitalization the market is implying if every token traded at the last print. That question only becomes useful when you attach unlock timing, emissions, and who receives the newly liquid supply.

Low float can make spot market cap look modest while FDV implies a much larger eventual size. Early launches often live in that gap. Your job is to judge whether demand, fees, or narrative heat can absorb supply as locks open — or whether price will do the reconciliation.

When max supply is unclear or uncapped, rebuild the model from emissions instead of forcing a single FDV number. Bad denominators create false precision. Pair FDV notes with liquidity so overhang is sized against real exit capacity.

• Compare two L2 peers: similar fees, but one has FDV 8× circulating while the other is 2× — ask which gap demand can fund.
• Rebuild FDV after a major burn or supply-policy change instead of reusing an outdated max-supply assumption.

Common mistakes

• Calling FDV “the real market cap” without unlock timing.
• Ignoring that illiquid books turn moderate unlocks into cascading wicks.
• Using FDV on uncapped emission assets as if max supply were hard.
